The Maytag Repairman Isn't Lonely Anymore

Maytag used to run those famous commercials with the lonely repairman who never got calls because Maytag machines never broke. That was actually true for a long time — the old Maytag machines built in Newton, Iowa were overengineered workhorses that ran for 25 years without drama.

Then Maytag was acquired by Whirlpool in 2006, and the product lines merged. Modern Maytag machines are built on Whirlpool platforms with heavier-duty components and a longer warranty, which is a good combination. They're not the exact same machine as a Whirlpool — the Maytag-branded versions typically use commercial-grade parts in key wear areas — but they share the same architecture, which means I know exactly how they're built.

I repair both the classic pre-2006 Maytag machines that are still running in older Twin Cities homes and the newer Whirlpool-era Maytag appliances — from washers to dryers. Each requires different knowledge, and I have both.

Old Maytag vs. New Maytag — I Know Both

The pre-2006 Maytag Dependable Care and Performa washers used a transmission-based drive system completely different from anything Whirlpool makes. These machines are still in service across Minneapolis, especially in rental properties and homes where the owners recognized quality and kept them running. I carry the gaskets, belts, and switches these older units need.

The newer Maytag Bravos (top-load) and Maxima (front-load) platforms are essentially premium Whirlpool Cabrio and Duet machines. They share the same control boards but use heavier springs, thicker drum paddles, and more robust bearings. When a Bravos fails, I diagnose it the same way I'd diagnose a Cabrio, but the part numbers are often Maytag-specific and I stock accordingly.

Common Maytag Issues I See

Bravos Lid Lock Problems

The Maytag Bravos top-loader has a motorized lid lock that sometimes fails to engage or gets stuck locked. The machine won't start if the lid lock doesn't report as closed. I replace the lock assembly and test the wiring harness that connects it to the main board.

Maytag Dryer Squeaking

Maytag dryers, especially the older models, develop a distinctive squeak when the drum glides wear down. The felt pads on the front drum support dry out and the metal-on-metal contact creates noise. I replace the glides and check the rear rollers at the same time.

Classic Maytag Washer Transmission

The pre-2006 Maytag transmission is rebuildable but expensive. When it starts leaking oil or the spin basket wobbles, I'll give you an honest assessment of whether a rebuild makes sense versus the age and condition of the machine.

Maytag Parts Are Still Available

Both old and new Maytag parts remain widely available. The pre-2006 machines have a dedicated aftermarket, and the newer Whirlpool-era models use parts that are cross-referenced in the Whirlpool system. I source factory-original parts whenever possible because the fit and longevity are consistently better than aftermarket alternatives.
